Lech Lecha Torah Club and Portion Connection Audio In Parashat Lech Lecha God selects a single man from amidst the sea of humanity and speaks to him saying, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you.” He promises him success, posterity, blessing, and renown. Abram sets out with his wife Sarai, all his servants and possessions, and his nephew Lot. They travel to the land of Canaan where God appears to him, promising to give the land of Canaan to the childless Abram’s son. A famine strikes the land, forcing Abram and company to seek shelter in Egypt where Sarai, Abram’s beautiful wife, is taken captive for the Pharaoh’s harem. God prevents Pharaoh from defiling the princess. Pharaoh returns her to Abram, and sends him out of Egypt with great wealth. Sometime later in the land of Canaan, Abram and his nephew Lot divide over water rights for their flocks. Lot chooses the plain of Sodom, but is soon carried off captive with the other citizens of the plain in an invasion from Mesopotamian nations. Abram defeats the invaders, frees the captives, and rescues his nephew. The wicked king of Sodom offers him a reward, but Abram refuses. He does, however, accept blessing from Melchizedek, the righteous king of Salem. God makes a covenant with Abram, promising that his seed will be as uncountable as the stars of the sky. Abram attempts to bring God’s promise to pass by marrying Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, who gives birth to Ishmael. Sarai mistreats her, and Hagar flees into the wilderness. An angel sends her back to Abram. The LORD changes Abram’s name to Abraham, and Sarai to Sarah, promising the birth of a son named Isaac, and giving to Abraham the commandment of circumcision as a sign of his covenant with God.
